SUBJECT ASSOCIATION ACTIVITY [ Film Review - The Man who Knew Infinity ]

 REVIEW OF THE FILM

 'THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY'

As part of our subject association activity,  we watched the move "The Man who Knew Infinity" based on the life of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan on 21/3/2022. The film tells us story of the remarkable early-twentieth century mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The film is exceptionally well scripted and includes a stellar cast. Ramanujan's genius grading recognized when he was growing up in South India. The movie gives hope that someone who always believed themselves to be ordinary can shine and be stunning. This is exactly what happens to Srinivasa Ramanuja Iyengar, played by Dev Patel in "The Man who Knew Infinity".

The film stars Dev Patel as Srinivasa Ramanujan, a real life mathematician who after growing up poor in Madras, India, earns admittance to cambridge University, during World war I, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G.H. Hardy,  portrayed by Jeremy Irons. Hardy, though. much impressed by Ramanujan's abilities, remains concerned about Ramanujan's ability to communicate effectively due to his lack of experience in writing proofs, but with perseverance, he manages to get Ramanujan published in a major journal. In the meantime, Ramanujan is diagnosed with tuberculosis. Hardy continues to see nuch more promises in Ramanujan. However, he remains unaware of the personal difficulties his student is having. Ramanujan's health worsens while he  continues delving into deeper and profound research is mathematics under the guidance of Hardy and others in Cambridge.

Hardy makes special efforts to gel Ramanujan's exceptional mathematical skills accepted by the university, by nominating Ramanujan for a fellowship of Trinity College. At first, Hardy fails for reasons related to collège politics and racial prejudice. By gaining the support of key members of the college, Hardy again successfully nominates Ramanujan as a Fellow of the Royal Sociey, thereby forcing his acceptance as fellow of Trinity. Ramanujan is eventually reunited with his family in India, though his declining health, exaurbated by poor housing and harsh winter weather in England, ultimately takes its toll and leads to his death aged 32, soon after his recognition as a mathematician of international merit and importance.

The film "The Man who Knew Infinity" is touching and brings Ramanujan's personal story to life, but if you have watched the film you may be wondering exactly what Ramanujan discovered and why his work is considered so extraordinary today. All the students enjoyed the film thoroughly. The session finally was finally concluded with a reviews and a vote of thanks by our association secretary Silpa.
